Wax seal stamps of the 17th and 18th centuries varied widely in shape, material, and decoration, reflecting their owner's rank and taste. Handles were often turned in baluster or domed forms, crafted from wood, ivory, or exotic materials like agate, carnelian, or jade. Matrices were typically circular or oval, engraved with coats of arms, monograms, or classical motifs. The 17th century favored more restrained, functional designs with clear heraldic engraving, while the 18th century embraced Rococo and Neoclassical styles with ornate gold or silver mounts, cabochon stones, and finely carved ivory. Colors ranged from the dark polish of ebony to the vibrant tones of semi-precious stones, making many stamps as decorative as they were functional.
For this collection, I could have chosen to classify the seal stamps in several ways, such as by country of origin, the rank of their original owner, the quality of the engraving, or the craftsmanship of the handle. Ultimately, however, I decided to organize them simply by color. Only the masterpieces' and the wax cases' sections showcase the stamps regardless of their color.
